Picker responds to the Royal College of Nursing’s ‘On the Frontline of the UK’s Corridor Care Crisis’ report

Responding to the Royal College of Nursing’s ‘On the Frontline of the UK’s Corridor Care Crisis’ report, Olli Potter, Senior Policy Officer at Picker, said:

“The findings from the Royal College of Nursing’s report into ‘corridor care’ are deeply concerning and paint a picture of an NHS that is under enormous pressures. These pressures are having a damaging impact on both patient experience and staff wellbeing.

“The experiences described by nurses responding to the RCN’s survey make for difficult reading. They demonstrate the need for urgent action to ensure staff can deliver the safe, effective and person centred care they want to, and point to the need to restore public confidence in health and care services.

“The upcoming ten-year plan and social care commission offer opportunities to deliver longer term change and to consign ‘corridor care’ to the history books, as acknowledged by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care yesterday.

The Picker Principles of Person Centred Care are clear that people deserve to be treated and cared for in a safe and comfortable environment that affords them privacy and dignity. ‘Corridor care’ must always be seen as the exception, never the norm.”
